Congratulations to our very own Donaire for his big win over Vasquez! We made it! Yehey! Philippines on top of the boxing world again! Proud to be Pinoy! Thank You, Lord! ☺
In his recent fight at Alabadome, San Antonio, Texas, for 122 pounds-division, four time world champion Nonito Donaire won a twelve round split decision over Wilfredo Vazquez.
The fight ended with an exchange of flurries.
Vazquez was far down on the two judges' card, but Donaire didn't find the knockout punch he was looking for.
A nice showcase of Nonito Donaire's skills, being a "thinking fighter".
This fight had much more action than his previous boring match with Narvaez, but still no knockout.
Vazquez hung in like a pro until the end.
Official judges' cards: 115-112 Vazquez, 117-110 Donaire, 117-110 Donaire.
Split decision victory goes to Donaire.

Nonito Donaire kept rolling along with a dominant victory over Wilfredo Vazquez Jr. on Saturday night to capture the WBO Super Bantamweight Championship. It was not a perfect fight for the new champion, but he showed his resolve and did what was necessary to walk away with a win.
Give Vazquez credit where it is due, he came in with nothing to lose. He was still trying to build himself back up after the loss last May to Jorge Arce, and managed to hang in there with one of the best pound-for-pound fighters in the world for 12 rounds.
There were plenty of stories to come out of Saturday's fight, and here is what we are most excited to see come out of this epic battle.

There seems to be a prevailing theory that Manny Pacquiao, Floyd Mayweather and Sergio Martinez are the best pound-for-pound fighters in the world. You can determine the order of the top two on your own.
Donaire's performance in the ring and natural ability deserves to be recognized in that little group. No disrespect to Martinez, but his resume doesn't compare to Donaire's.
The new champion has not lost a fight in 11 years, and has taken on all challengers without belittling anyone in the ring. His accomplishments deserve to be talked about in the same vein as Pacquiao and Mayweather.

Nonito Donaire Vs. Wilfredo Vazquez Jr.: Donaire Wins Split Decision In Action-Packed Fight

San Leandro-based Nonito Donaire emerged victorious in his junior featherweight debut. We break down his split decision victory over Wilfredo Vazquez, Jr. For more boxing coverage, head over to Bad Left Hook.
Feb 4, 2012 - San Leandro-based Filipino fighter Nonito Donaire overcome a battered left hand to secure a split decision Saturday evening over Wilfredo Vazquez, Jr. Donaire claimed a pair of 117-110 decisions, while losing a baffling 115-112 decision on a third scorecard as he won his debut fight in the junior featherweight ranks. The fight was quite close in the middle rounds, but Donaire seemed to put it away late after dropping Vazquez for an eight-count in the ninth round. I suppose a questionable scorecard should not be surprising in boxing.
I had the fight scored 117-110 for Donaire, in spite of the fact that Donaire spent much of the fight head-hunting for a quick knockout. He rarely went for body shots and instead continually lined up head shots. By the last round it become apparent why he was operating in that manner. The broadcast mentioned that they had learned Donaire had injured one of his hands earlier in the fight. After the fight ended and Donaire removed his gloves, there was quite a bit of blood on his left hand. With that in mind, it made a lot more sense that he would not be prepared to take his time with a bunch of body shots.
The fight started off fairly slowly with the first few rounds going to Donaire as he was simply the more active fighter. However, once we reached the fourth round, Vazquez found his way as he began to consistently land a jab. He become more active and was starting to land the jab at will. He slowly began to accumulate rounds and was looking right back in the fight heading into the ninth round.
However, early in the ninth, Donaire caught him flush with a right and then a left uppercut, before putting him down with a left hook. Vazquez took the standing eight-count, but in spite of what one judge scored it, that effectively marked the end of the fight. Vazquez claimed the final round, but the 10-8 round pushed this fight a little too far out of reach. He stunned Donaire a couple times with some big shots, but was never able to take advantage.
