Rainy weekend seen for most of Philippines from 'Igme' and 'Julian'

Typhoon Igme (Tembin) continues to weaken as it moves over Taiwan, but it and Typhoon Julian (Bolaven) are still enhancing the southwest monsoon over the Philippines, PAGASA said Friday afternoon.

PAGASA forecaster Aldczar Aurelio said that both typhoons will bring strong monsoon winds and relatively moderate rain on Saturday and Sunday, with the weather likely to improve next week.

"Itong dalawang bagyo ay patuloy na humahatak sa southwest monsoon kaya medyo maulap, may light to moderate rain; hindi tulad noong nakaraang araw na matinding ulan, maraming flash floods and landslides (The two typhoons will continue to enhance the southwest monsoon and bring light to moderate rain, not like the heavy rain that brought flash floods and landslides earlier this month)," he said in an interview on dzBB radio.

According to PAGASA forecast models, Julian may exit the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) as early as Sunday afternoon, and Igme on Monday or Tuesday.

After both typhoons exit the Philippines, there will be a "gradual improvement" of weather conditions by Monday or Tuesday, he said.

PAGASA's 5 p.m. advisory said that Igme was estimated at 260 km northwest of Basco, Batanes, as of 4 p.m., with  maximum sustained winds of 120 kph near the center and gustiness of up to 150 kph.

It was moving west-southwest at 7 kph and is expected to be 380 km west-northwest of Basco, Batanes Saturday afternoon.

Batanes is still under Storm Signal No. 2, whereas Calayan and the Babuyan Islands are still under Storm Signal No. 1.

PAGASA said Igme may bring "heavy to intense" rainfall of around 10 to 25 mm per hour within its 500-km diameter.

The agency also warned that Igme will likely turn back and head east within the next 24 to 48 hours due to its interaction with Typhoon Julian.

"Fishing boats and other small seacrafts are advised not to venture out into the northern and eastern seaboards of Luzon due to big waves generated by Typhoon Igme and Typhoon Julian," it added.

Meanwhile, PAGASA said Julian maintained its strength and was estimated at 1,000 km east-northeast of Basco, Batanes as of 4 p.m.

Julian packed maximum sustained winds of 150 kph near the center and gustiness of up to 185 kph and is forecast to move northwest at 15 kph. — TJD, GMA News
