The remains of the late Interior and Local Secretary Jesse Robredo were brought back to his home in Naga City after lying in state for two days at the Kalayaan Hall in MalacaƱang Palace.
The remains of the late Interior and Local Government Sec. Jesse Robredo were brought back to his hometown of Naga City Sunday.
Robredo’s remains arrived at the Naga Airport shortly after 9 a.m., accompanied by his widow, Atty. Leni, and their three children, Aika, Patricia and Jillian.
Philippine National Police (PNP) chief Nicanor Bartolome met the Robredo family at the tarmac, and the PNP also gave arrival honors to the late secretary.
As of posting, Robredo’s funeral cortege was currently making its way to the Naga City Hall, which was the late secretary’s office for 18 years during his time as mayor of Naga City.
The cortege was accompanied by a police escort as well as hundreds of cyclists wearing yellow. As Naga City Mayor, Robredo was known to inspect the city while riding his bike.
Residents of Naga have also come out in droves to pay their final respects to the mayor who is credited for turning their hometown into a first-class city.
Earlier this morning, Manila Archbishop Luis Antonio Tagle presided over a mass for Robredo, wherein he said that the late secretary was a blessing to the Philippines who served as a good example not only to other public servants but to ordinary citizens as well.
After the mass, the wake was temporarily closed to give the Robredo family time for closed viewing.
Before leaving MalacaƱang, Robredo was given departure honors led by the Presidential Security Group (PSG).
Budget Sec. Florencio “Butch” Abad, Transportation Sec. Mar Roxas, Rep. Juan Abaya of the Liberal Party, Harvey Keh of the Kaya Natin Movement, Alice Murphy of the Urban Poor group and Joan dela Cruz of the DILG were the honorary pallbearers during the departure honors.
Robredo was also given a 19-gun salute.
Along OsmeƱa Highway, the funeral cortege was given a water salute by the Bureau of Fire Protection. Policemen along Quirino Highway also gave a final salute to Robredo.
Robredo was given departure honors by the Armed Forces of the Philippines at the Villamor Airbase before his casket was brought inside a a short C23 aircraft, a private cargo plane. It was the same plane that brought his remains to Manila last Friday.
President Benigno Aquino III accompanied the Robredo family to the Villamor Airbase.
Robredo’s remains are expected to arrive at the Naga City Hall around 10:20 a.m., where he will also be given arrival honors.
A liturgical ceremony and a mass will follow.
Public viewing and vigil will be held at 3 p.m. to 5 p.m., and again at 9 p.m. to 12 a.m. at the Naga City Hall.
There will be another mass at 5 p.m. and a necrological service at 7 p.m.
Robredo will be buried on Tuesday. – Report from DZMM.
